Whilst a strategic business objective may be to automate business processes, when facing a blank canvas it can be very difficult to identify and prioritise the right process to automate first. Even when business feel they understand the best processes, assumptions, when not tested, may lead to ineffective use of development time at an opportunity cost to other more appropriate options.
An Automation Opportunity Assessment provides a structured approach to identify and document the exact processes to prioritise and focus automation efforts. This activity could be undertaken as part of a Current State Assessment to identify the opportunities or it could be used to validate the businesses assumptions on the right approach.
A business’ review of its own process is likely to bring bias and assumptions. This means even the best intentions may not produce the best results. In my experience internal reviews without specific automation experience also focus on varying and sometimes unhelpful criteria to capture business value.
