I am pleased to share that I have been accepted as a mentor by Migrant Leaders
The charity Migrant Leaders supports young migrants within the UK who are from lower socioeconomic backgrounds due to the disadvantage that migration causes. The charity aims to set the direction and accelerate the development of young migrants and, through this early bespoke intervention, achieve a more level playing field enabling everyone to fulfil their potential in Britain. This includes inspiring to enable and equip individuals who experience significant challenges such as late arrival in the UK school system, multiple moves between schools, family breakup, living in deprived neighbourhoods and lack of contacts.
My mentoring role is aligned to support high potential young migrants already in education either at college or university.
I have personal experience from meeting a number of professional migrants in the UK ranging from finance professionals to doctors who have simply been stopped in their professional track purely by coming to the UK. I have seen a range of outcomes from their situations, some eventually working back into their area of expertise, whilst adjusting to a very different type of life here in the UK. All situations have involved a lot of uncertainty, difficulties, stress and challenges, without even mentioning the personal experiences they may have encountered in the country they left.
I’ve found it a very humbling experience getting to know migrants who are in the UK whilst recognising from their experiences the difficulties they have faced. When I first heard about Migrant Leaders I knew I wanted to be involved. The opportunity here is to have a very meaningful impact and provide an opportunity to inspire an individual who otherwise may not have been given the same chance. Providing an additional positive influence for individuals at such an early stage of their life and career will enable a huge opportunity for development and growth over many years.
